Our Approach to Early Childhood Education

HTCCC uses a creative approach inspired by various educational approaches such as STEM, Project Approach Based Learning, Emergent Curriculum, and Maria Montessori philosophy to build a learning environment that tells children they are respected, trusted, capable, and competent in their own learning. Our goal is to emphasize and nurture the process, not the product. In our curriculum units we use science concepts such as form and function, change, substance and matter, systems and interaction, exploring stability, force and motion, simple machines, warm and cold, five senses, magnetism and magnetic field, sink or float, cause and effect, build and balance, and living vs. non-living. We build our projects around our unit and children’s interest and on-going investigations.

We provide children with opportunities to explore, ask questions, make predictions, experiment, test their ideas, collect information, document, reflect, and draw conclusions. On a daily basis we watch our children use STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to formulate ideas and test them, whether they are playing with water of different temperatures, looking for worms, color mixing, planting vegetable seeds, working together to solve a math problem, letter constructions or building a tower.

Children learn through their play. All materials they play with, all ideas they play with, they are learning from. Keep in mind that science is inclusive of all other areas as math, language and literacy, art, and creativity. Science uniquely qualifies for such an integrated approach. Each day at HTCCC our children will incorporate STEM into our Mathematics, Language and Literacy, Science, and Art. During learning workshop period the children will rotate to these four centers. Not only, do we focus on kindergarten preparedness but we also focus on shaping the child socially, emotionally and spiritually.

HTCCC is a preschool program that benefits the child, family, and the community. We recognize the need for children to interact with other children, and their need for loving teachers. Children attend chapel once a week and are invited to participate in songs, and stories about God’s love. Twice a year we have “Children’s Sunday” where the children are invited to do a Chapel presentation during church service.

Why STEM?

By introducing STEM concepts in early childhood, Holy Trinity Child Care Center prepares today’s children to become tomorrow’s innovator, thinkers, entrepreneurs and stewards of global well-being.

Children are like little scientist and builders by nature. Therefore we can support introducing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics through fun and engaging practices recommended by NAEYC National Association of Education for Young Children.

The 21st century’s increasingly integrated economy depends on innovation, which requires a solid foundation in science, technology, engineering and math. Research confirms that the brain is particularly receptive to learning math and logic between the ages of one and four, and that early math and skills are some of the most powerful predictions of later learning. The path to proficiency in STEM starts in preschool, when the understanding of mathematical operations, shapes, patterns and science is beginning. High quality early education programs such as HTCCC teach math and science in an enjoyable play-based way so that young children will have fun discovering their proficiency in science, technology, math and engineering.
