James F. Phillips is blessed with 30 years of marriage to Wanda Rosado-Martinez and two adult sons, James and Antonio. Wanda has been not just first lady but his supportive partner in the ministry of Christ Jesus, assisting and many time coordinating needed programs in each congregation. His sons were also active in serving as acolytes, power point projections, playing the drums and singing in the congregations.
As a child, the family attended St. Philip Lutheran Church. When the family moved to another neighborhood, James was baptized age 7 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Columbus, Ohio. In high school, James took training and became an “action group” leader in Campus Crusade for Christ and participated in local evangelism rallies.
Pastor was ordained 31 years ago, serving three parishes, St. John Lutheran Church, Oakland CA.; St. Mark Lutheran Church, Chicago, Ill. and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Washington, D.C. Rev. Phillips also served as the Executive Director of the Black Hawk Lutheran Conference of the Northeast Iowa Synod, a coalition of 12 congregations; coordinating evangelism, stewardship, race relations and aids patients ministry programs. He was African-American Coalition Director in the ELCA.
Pastor Phillips earned a Master of Theology Degree from the LSTC in Chicago; a Master of Divinity from PLTS and a bachelor’s degree in American History from Kent State University. Pastor Phillips studied one year at Hong Kong Lutheran Theological Seminary, in Shatin, China; as the first student in the Multicultural Exchange program with PLTS.
Outside of Parish ministry, Pastor Phillips has served in many different roles. He taught Old Testament Bible Study and preaching courses as a Continuing Education instructor at Howard Divinity School and served as the ELCA chaplain at Howard University. Pastor was instrumental in forming and serving on the board of the Racial Equity Team of Metro Washington DC Synod. He also had the honor of being one of the preachers for the most recent ELCA Church Wide Assembly in New Orleans, with a sermon entitled “Raise Your Expectations.”
Pastor Phillips is indebted to the many spiritual mentors that God sent to him; the late Bishop Nelson Trout, Mr. Grover Wright, Bishop Will Herzfeld, Rev. Dr. Richard Wallace and Rev. Dr. Pete Pero. Included in his gratitude, are Rev. Dr. Edmond Yee; Rev. Craig Lewis, Rev. Dr. Cheryl Stewart-Pero and Rev. Dr. James Thomas who helped Pastor Phillips along the way. Thank the Lord!
Pastor Phillips began his service at Holy Trinity on October 1st 2017 along with his wife Wanda and youngest son Antonio. We are excited for this new journey for Holy Trinity and invite you to join us for worship on Sunday mornings at 10:30am.
